I think the theatrical use of "thespian" comes from a guy named Thespis who lived during the 500s BCE (don't remember exactly when). He was the legendary "first actor" or the first to create the role of the "actor" on stage. I've also heard he was the first playwright of the Greek tragedy genre. Some scholars debate how historically accurate this is however...from what I understand...which actually isn't much. LOL. :)

Thanks Annie. Could you tell me how "thespian" came to be used to describe an actor?

Actually, Spartans did not fight in the nude, quite the contrary. Spartan hoplites would have had heavy armor in battle, not that much different from the Greek hoplite. This is actually an inaccuracy in the movie. However, the film makers have said (as was mentioned above) that when it came to history vs. keeping with the graphic novel...they chose the latter and they mentioned this instance (almost nude as opposed to historical accuracy) specifically. They wanted to portray the intense training that the Spartans went through, and they felt the best way to do that was through feats of physical strength and fighting, as well as showing the male body in pretty much perfect form, without a breast plate or heavy armor covering it.
That said, the Greeks did have games and sports played in the nude, just not in combat (even though Greek hoplites might have been portrayed as such on vases or other pottery).

On a side note, there weren't only 300 Spartans left during the last hours of the battle, there were also around 700 Thespians (who refused to leave with the other Greeks) that stayed to fight until the end. So technically it's the last stand of the Spartans AND Thespians at Thermopylae.

I wouldn't say it's a must see - especially not for the costumes. Xerxes? Ugh. The Persian army... well, they were demonized in the legend, to make the odds against the 300 look as bad as they could, so a bit of artistic license there is okay I guess. The Spartan women's costumes were just silly, and the men...

DAMNIT! Gerard Butler was supposed to be NUDE!!! Stupid puritan Hollywood sensibilities!

There was a nice bit of narration drawn from the Greek legend, and the "feel" of the movie was really quite chilling... yes the fight scenes are long and bloody and EXCITING, but this tale is gigantic in scale so I think they did a good job. I hope there's more where this came from!

Gory, but beautiful. Tragic (and in places ridiculously over-acted) but believable, in a way. Humanised like the classic tale should be, owing to it's importance in ancient Greece's sense of identity as a nation.

And now can anyone argue against the obvious fact that GERARD BUTLER IS THE MANLIEST MAN ON THE PLANET???

I don't know all the history, I don't even know the comic, but the movie was fantastic, seen it twice already. There's a reason why this movie is making records in the box office. Movies like Alexander and Troy are nice to look at, but the difference is 300 actually has a good script and isn't boring in the least. IMO, anyway.

I love that there are so many familiar faces in the Spartan army.

I don't know about the book, but I am eager to see the film. The story is great. I wish all the great works of greek literature, greek philosophy and history would be made into films. If the film is a bomb, somebody should just make another one.

The company my sister works for has produced this film. It's a highly stylized version. Drawing on many of the scenes from the comic book, not the actual story. Nevertheless it really make some wonderful drama.

Anyone got any sneak peaks or thoughts on this?
